Wild Turkey on Oahu

Wild turkeys were reintroduced to the island of Oahu in Hawaii thanks to support from Wildlife Forever. Stocking efforts in the early 1960s established healthy flocks of Rio Grande wild turkeys on all the major Hawaiian Islands except Oahu. The turkeys are now an important species for the annual game bird hunt. In an effort to establish wild turkeys on Oahu, approximately 50 birds were trapped on other Hawaiian Islands and transferred to Oahu for release. Future plans call for the area to be open for hunting when the population reaches sustainable levels.
