White Bear Lake, MN – Wildlife Forever is proud to offer Prairie City USA to communities across the country as a model conservation program restoring ecological function to the landscape, beautifying urban and rural cities.
As a certified Prairie City, municipalities adopt and implement best practices for pollinator habitat, carbon sequestration, erosion control, and water quality. Working to integrate native prairie and local ecotype landscapes, Prairie City starts with civic leadership and a commitment to conservation.
“Fergus Falls joined Prairie City USA and quickly realized cost savings through reduced mowing, manpower, and maintenance. These economic savings are in addition to the ecological and esthetic benefits that native plantings contribute to our city,” said Mayor Ben Schierer.
Through a 5-step application, cities can initiate the process toward certification which ranges from Level 1 – 5, depending on the percent of green space they choose to convert to prairie and pollinator habitat. A long-term management plan is provided upon certification to aid in sustaining the quality of the restoration sites over time.
“Prairie City USA® helps municipalities and citizens engage and get reconnected with the landscape. Investing in conservation restores a very physical and mental connection to nature that we need now more than ever,” said Pat Conzemius, President and CEO of Wildlife Forever.
