Wetland Restoration Project Wins National Award
An important wetland restoration project in the Flaming Gorge Ranger District of Utah’s Ashley National Forest received the prestigious “Taking Wing” Award for Community Involvement. The project was supported by Wildlife Forever and various government agencies, non-profit organizations, and private landowners around the Flaming Gorge Reservoir. Previously, the Reservoir had provided plenty of deep, open-water habitats, but few shallow areas because of steep banks and fluctuating water levels. By constructing ponds and wet meadows around the reservoir, the project helped create 300 acres of shallow-water areas for migrating shorebirds, as well as waterfowl, eagles, osprey, and cranes. To better serve the thousands of visitors to the reservoir, viewing areas, trails, and picnic areas were also constructed.
Utah Burn Improves Elk and Mule Deer Habitat
CONTROLLED BURN IMPROVES ELK AND MULE DEER HABITAT

Support from Wildlife Forever helped the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service complete a prescribed burn on 2,000 acres in Sanpete County, Utah. The burn eliminated invading evergreens and stimulated the growth of aspen and browse for elk and mule deer. Aerial seeding promoted the growth of grass and forbs. The 2,000-acre tract is located in Canal Canyon, an area that provides excellent calving areas for elk. The canyon provides wildlife with better security than any other area in the Sanpete Ranger District.
Books Cliff Conservation Initiative Secures 450,000 Acres
BOOKS CLIFF CONSERVATION INITIATIVE SECURED 450,000 ACRES

Wildlife Forever helped secure 450,000 acres of habitat for elk, mule deer, moose, bighorn sheep and fisheries in Utah. Known as the Books Cliff Initiative, the project resulted in the purchase of privately owned ranches in the area to protect critical habitat for wildlife, restore degraded trout streams, and provide public access and recreation opportunities. Wildlife Forever partnered with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, North American Hunting Club, Bureau of Land Management, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, and The Nature Conservancy to make this conservation dream a reality.
